Garcia, who is a Hero of the Republic of Cuba and the first peasant to join the rebel forces in the Sierra Maestra mountain range, laid a wreath at the monolith in which Fidel Castro’s ashes are kept, on his 98th birthday, August 13, 1926.
Beatriz Johnson, a member of the Communist Party of Cuba (PCC)’s Central Committee; Governor Manuel Falcon, a member of the Council of State and First Secretary in this province; Garcia’s relatives; and the leader of social organizations also paid tribute to Fidel Castro. The Cuban people, represented by an endless line of Santiago citizens, came to pay tribute to the Commander at the Sacred Altar of the Homeland, as a tradition on dates allegorical to his life, work, death, and placing his ashes at the monument stone on December 4, 2016.
