Bill to criminalize protests rejected in Panama

Panama City, Aug 13 ( Prensa Latina) The National Central of Workers of Panama (CNTP) rejected today a bill, presented to the National Assembly (unicameral parliament), that criminalizes social protests in the country

The initiative, received by the Permanent Commission of Government, is defended by the deputy Enzo Polo of the ruling party Realizando Metas, seeks to criminalize the closing of streets, highways, roads, bridges, tunnels, and other transit routes.

In a statement, the union organization points out that behind this project are the business elite and the right-wing government, which have already seen what the people are capable of doing in defense of their legitimate rights and the homeland, as occurred in July 2022 and in October and November 2023, the latter demonstrations against open-pit metal mining.

For the CNTP, this group of businessmen and elites in conspiracy and with the approval of the Executive Branch need a law that judicializes the protests, follows plans to transfer to the private sector the Social Security Fund, open the Donoso copper mine (Colon), and make forced and repressive displacements in communities, among other arbitrary actions.

They also intend to imprison those who use their constitutional right to demonstrate against policies such as imposing dams and water reservoirs in Rio Indio, making regressive reforms to the labor code, and imposing more taxes on the working people, according to the text.
