Guterres urges political dialogue in Sudan as famine progresses

Antonio-Guterres1-6
United Nations, Aug 12 (Prensa Latina) The UN Secretary General, António Guterres, urged political dialogue as the situation of Sudanese civilians in El Fasher, capital of the state of Darfur, where famine conditions are reported, worsens.

A statement released by his spokesman warned of the devastating consequences of hostilities between the Sudanese Armed Forces, the Rapid Support Forces and elements of the Armed Fighting Movements in that region of western Sudan, mired in a conflict that has been raging for more than a year.

Guterres called for compliance with their obligations under international humanitarian law to protect and allow safe passage for civilians and to facilitate rapid and unimpeded humanitarian access.

He also called for an immediate end to hostilities and the establishment of a lasting ceasefire.

According to the High Representative, political dialogue is the only way to reach a negotiated solution.

A recent report by the agency stated that more than half of the Sudanese population faces acute hunger while 14 areas could be declared at risk of famine in the coming months.

The Integrated Rating Index report warned of extreme food shortages particularly in North Darfur, where conflict keeps the Sudanese in the highest ranking of food insecurity.
