European countries support call for an Israel-Hamas ceasefire

London, Aug 12 (Prensa Latina) The United Kingdom, Germany, and France on Monday supported the call made by the leaders of Egypt, Qatar, and the United States so that Israel and the Palestinian movement Hamas resume negotiations over a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip.

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, and French President Emmanuel Macron made the remark during a joint statement.

The fighting must end now and all hostages still detained by Hamas must be released, while the people of Gaza need urgent and unfettered delivery and distribution of aid, The European statement added.

The three top officials also expressed serious concern about tensions in the region and called on Iran and its allies to refrain from attacks that could further increase regional tensions and jeopardize the ability to negotiate a ceasefire and release the hostages.

Overnight on August 9, the leaders of Egypt, Qatar, and the United States issued a joint statement calling on Israel and Hamas to resume ceasefire negotiations in the Gaza Strip on August 15 in Doha or Cairo.

They also expressed their willingness to present a final draft agreement based on the principles proposed by US President Joe Biden and endorsed by United Nations Security Council Resolution 2735.
