ELN armed strike generates confinement in western Colombia

Bogota, Aug 12 (Prensa Latina) Several residents of Choco, western Colombia, remain confined today due to the armed strike decreed in the area by the National Liberation Army (ELN) for an offensive against the Gulf Clan.

The measure announced by the guerrilla, which began at midnight last Sunday, affects several municipalities including Istmina, Medio Baudó, Sipí, Nóvita and Medio San Juan.

In these localities, according to the governor of the department, Nubia Córdoba, all activities were stopped.

“The units of the Ómar Gómez War Front of the ELN continue in defense of the communities and the territory, fulfilling our duty and revolutionary commitment, as prevention to prevent the population from being affected in the development of defensive operations the ELN decrees ‘indefinite armed stoppage’ in the San Juan, Sipí and Cajón rivers”, referred the insurgency.

In response to the action, which implies an alert to the communities where confrontations will take place, the Army ordered the deployment of five thousand troops.
