Africa will demand a greater presence in global governance at the UN

United Nations, Aug 12 (Prensa Latina) The UN Security Council will analyze the effective representation of Africa within the institution, a controversial issue raised to reverse historical debt, called by Sierra Leone in its capacity, this month, as president of that institution.

The issue will resume the debate on the reform of the Council, composed of 15 members but with only five permanent seats since its creation, occupied by China, France, Russia, the United States, and the United Kingdom.

Africa, one of the most underrepresented regions within the global system, demands more space within the Security Council.

Some versions of the negotiations propose an expanded Security Council between 21 and 27 members, which should, as a priority, “correct the historical injustice against Africa”.

These negotiations recognize Africa as a special case, which should improve the representation of under and unrepresented regions and groups.
