The head of the UN Agency for Palestinian Refugees, Philippe Lazzarini, called for an “end to the horrors” of the conflict that has lasted more than 10 months after the IDF attacked a mosque inside the Al Tabaeen school on Saturday morning, killing nearly a hundred people.

“We cannot allow the unbearable to become the new norm. The more it happens, the more we will lose our collective humanity,” the commissioner general rejected in a message posted on his account on X.

According to the UN Human Rights Office, Saturday’s attack adds to the growing wave of attacks by Tel Aviv against educational centers where hundreds of thousands of forcibly displaced Palestinians take refuge.

The Al Tabaeen school was hit at least three times “with apparent disregard for the high rate of civilian deaths,” the Office denounced in a statement.

Since July 4, the UN has counted 21 attacks against schools that serve as shelters and that caused at least 274 deaths, including women and children.

According to the main human rights body, the current offensive against displaced shelters suggests a strict non-compliance with the obligations required by international humanitarian law. Gaza’s internally displaced people are facing unspeakable horror after 10 months of hostilities, including multiple forced displacements, the rapid spread of disease and continued denial of access to basic necessities of life, the Office said.

Other UN data says that 90 percent of Gaza’s population -estimated at 2.3 million people- has been displaced up to ten times since 7 October, when hostilities broke out.

Meanwhile, local authorities estimate that more than 39,000 Palestinians have been killed and 91,000 wounded in the ongoing war.
