Intervention of Mothers’ University in Argentina denounced

Buenos Aires, Aug 9 (Prensa Latina) The rector of the National University Mothers of Plaza de Mayo (UNMA), Cristina Caamaño, reiterated her denunciation of the intervention of this educational center by the Argentine government, in an interview published by the newspaper Página 12.

In declarations to this newspaper, Caamaño condemned the violation of the autonomy of this institution and the intentions to persecute the project, the Mothers and all the people who work there.

She also stated that employees and students remain in the UNMA building “as a form of resistance, peaceful struggle and alert”.

Last week, the Comptroller (Eduardo Luis Maurizzio) appeared at the university guarded by six people and entered through the basement. The students asked him to leave. The intrusion without any communication or previous contact was registered before Justice, he added.

Created by the fighter Hebe de Bonafini (1928-2022) with the aim of spreading knowledge as a tool for transformation and fostering political commitment in young people, the UNMA achieved in 2023 the autonomy and the necessary public funding, after a key vote of deputies and senators.

During recent times, its professors and students denounced the withdrawal of funds, the disregard of the elected authorities and other actions of Javier Milei’s Executive.

It is a de facto intervention of the national government that uses the figure of the organizing rector, despite the fact that at UNMA the members of the faculty and non-teaching workers were already selected in a sovereign assembly. A Superior Council was elected and Caamaño was unanimously ratified as rector. All this they want to ignore, Professor Demetrio Iramain explained.

UNMA has 2,300 students, 190 teachers and 90 non-teaching employees, who have decided to remain in a state of permanent alert and mobilization.
