United Nations calls for immediate action to curb famine in Sudan

United Nations, Aug 6 (Prensa Latina) The growing risk of famine spreading in Sudan requires immediate action by the international community as the conflict has worsened the influx of humanitarian aid and agricultural activity.

A recent statement by the United Nations Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) urged an immediate cessation of hostilities along with a rapid increase in life-saving food, nutrition, cash assistance, and emergency agricultural aid.

The organization noted that the aid is fundamental in conflict-affected areas to meet immediate needs and prevent the risk of famine from escalating and spreading to other Sudanese regions.

The latest United Nations Integrated Classification Index report confirms that more than half of Sudan’s population is at risk of acute hunger in a situation that is also affecting agriculture, in which nearly 65 percent of the country’s population works.

The report confirms dire conditions for the first time in 14 regions that could be declared famine zones in the coming months.

Nearly 14 million people were facing acute hunger before the conflict erupted in April 2023; the number is now estimated at 26 million Sudanese.
