The opening of the immense 52-meter-high structure was dedicated to peace in Syria and throughout the East and was attended by functionaries and religious figures.
The monument, crowned by an eight-meter-high white statue of the Virgin Mary, was the initiative of Syrian emigrant Khalil Michel Nakad who had the support of more than 4,000 inhabitants of Al-Hawash and the local and church authorities.
The complex also includes a Byzantine-style church with seating for about 300 people, a large esplanade, a multi-purpose hall for 150 people, parking, a visitor reception center, and a tower.
The opening ceremony included musical recitations, fireworks, and prayers for the peace and welfare of the Syrian people who have been facing a war for more than 13 years.
