Guatemala records 141 homicides less than in 2023 term

Guatemala City, Aug 6 (Prensa Latina) Despite the perception of violence in Guatemala, Deputy Security Minister Claudia Palencia highlighted Tuesday a decrease of 141 homicides so far compared to the same term in 2023.

In an interview with the Red Noticias Radio Station, the deputy minister argued that throughout the first months of 2024, the data show a constant drop in violent incidents.

Her statements were related to the impeachment trial this afternoon of Security Minister Francisco Jimenez regarding the actions of youth gangs or criminal groups.

Among other issues to be clarified in Parliament is the security for legislators and prisons, apart from the plan applied for the population.

Data from the National Economic Research Center (CIEN) unfolded that the murder rate per 100,000 inhabitants in the country continues to showcase a downward trend.

It closed at 16 homicides per 100,000 inhabitants in the first six months of 2024, she described adding that the attrition has been consistent since 2009, when the rate reached an alarming 46.5.
