The tremor was located off the coast of Sonsonate, at a depth of 32.32 kilometers, and was due to the subduction process of the Cocos and Caribbean tectonic plates.
The tremor occurred at 1:18 a.m. (local time) and was felt in the cities of Santa Ana, San Salvador, Guatemala, San Miguel, Tegucigalpa and Managua. Authorities reported that there were no casualties or material damages.
El Salvador is located in the Pacific Ring of Fire, a geographic area that extends along the edge of the Pacific Ocean and encompasses a large number of countries and territories, including the west coast of North and South America, as well as Asia and Oceania, which stands out for being highly seismic and volcanic.
