Costa Rica and Colombia thwart 8.5 tons of cocaine trafficking

San José, Aug 6 (Prensa Latina) Joint operations between Costa Rican and Colombian anti-drug agencies thwarted the arrival of 8.5 tons of cocaine and 2.9 tons of marijuana to the Central American country this year, reported Teletica channel today.

The Specialized Department against Drug Trafficking of the Costa Rican Attorney General’s Office exchanged with its counterpart in Bogota structural investigations, information and international cooperation mechanisms to dismantle drug trafficking structures, especially through maritime routes and “go-fast” boats, the television station added.

The boats leave from Colombia’s Pacific coast and Antioquia’s Urabá region for Costa Rica, which, according to the Public Prosecutor’s Office in Bogotá, serves as a storage center for shipping drugs, especially to the United States.

The joint work of Costa Rican institutions with Colombian entities such as the Technical Investigation Corps of the Public Prosecutor’s Office, the National Police and the Navy has so far in 2022 dismantled different drug shipments to various destinations.

The results of the joint operations in 2023 include the seizure of 14.7 tons of cocaine and 12.7 tons of marijuana, as well as the capture of 75 smugglers, 24 of them Costa Ricans.
