Awkward moment: Olympic champions’ coach’s credentials revoked

Paris, Aug 6 (Prensa Latina) Tokyo 2020 Olympic champions, Italian Marcell Jacobs and Canadian Andre de Grasse, will not be able to count on their coach for the remainder of Olympic athletics, as the credentials of the coach of both were revoked.

This is the American coach Rana Reider, who had been accredited by the Canadian Olympic Committee (COC) for the summer event, despite lawsuits filed by three female athletes against him for alleged sexual and emotional abuse.

Reider was investigated for alleged inappropriate conduct and since the probationary period (one year) to which he was subjected had concluded in May, and since he had no other suspensions or sanctions, the COC decided to accredit him for the event under the five rings as part of the technical team of its athletics team.

“Coach Reider met all of our eligibility requirements,” the COC said, but after receiving new details and exchanging information with Athletics Canada (the nation’s athletic federation), it was agreed to revoke his accreditation.

After what happened, De Grasse, the reigning champion of the 100m, and Jacobs, the 100m champion in the Japanese capital, will not be able to count on the support of their coach, at least physically with them, when they still have the semi-finals and possibly the 200m final pending for the former and the short relay in both cases.

In the 100m, Jacobs revived his laurels with a good fifth place in the final and a magnificent time of 9.85 seconds; while De Grasse had been eliminated in the semi-finals.
