M23 and local militias continue fighting in DRC despite the ceasefire

Kinshasa, Aug 5 (Prensa Latina) Rebels of the March 23 Movement (M23) and local militias continued fighting in Nyamilima, despite the entry into force of the ceasefire between Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

Yesterday morning, the M23 and members of the so-called Wazalendo self-defense group of the homeland clashed again in the locality of Nyamilima, in the territory of Rutshuru, province of North Kivu.

The insurgents occupied that community the day before and, according to statements made by local sources to Radio Okapi, they were trying to advance towards the town of Ishasha, on the border with Uganda, and the town Nyakakoma town, on the shores of Lake Edouard.

They also indicated that they attempted to conquer the village of Buganza, four kilometers from Nyamilima, but met resistance from the Wazalendo supported by Ishasha.

The M23 is trying to have total control and access to the whole Binza grouping, where it already occupies several localities, at a moment when the governments of the DRC and Rwanda agreed to a cease-fire under Angolan mediation.

The decision was effective from 00:00 local time on August 4; however, the M23 rebels, who welcomed and accepted the decision, specified that they do not have to abide by agreements in whose negotiation they did not participate. jrr/arm/oda/kmg
