Germany insists on missile deployment, despite Russian warning

Berlin, Aug 4 (Prensa Latina) The German Foreign Minister, Annalena Baerbock, insisted today on defending the deployment of US medium and short range missiles in this country, despite Russia's warnings against this step.

Baerbock said in an article published in Bild am Sonntag, Russia, and specifically its President Vladimir Putin, represents a threat to Europe and to this country.

Putin recently indicated that, if Germany finally accepts the stationing of medium-range missiles on its territory, which, he said, is a danger to Russian security, his country will reinforce protection by deploying similar weapons in its western portion.

Washington and Berlin agreed that the Pentagon will re-deploy Tomahawk cruise missiles here from next year, with a range to reach Russia, and SM-6 anti-aircraft defense rockets, as well as newly developed hypersonic weapons.

German local press highlighted the criticism received by Baerbock for her recent declarations that for her government the priority was to support and rearm Ukraine to prevent a victory of Moscow in the conflict in that country.
