Death toll rises to 37 after attack in Somalia

Mogadishu, Aug 4 (Latin Press) The death toll from a terrorist attack by the radical group Al Shabbab on a hotel in Somalia's capital rose to 37 today, where 247 people were also injured, medical sources in the capital said.

Among the injured there are 11 in critical conditions, after Al Shabbab perpetrated last Friday the worst violent attack of the last two years in this country, in the facility located on the Lido beach, frequented by functionaries and businessmen.

The attack, which included a suicide bomber setting off a bomb in front of the Beach View Hotel, was considered a barbaric attack, said Somali Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre, who announced the arrest of police and military officers for negligence.

Many suspects, including several police officers, have been arrested and are under investigation, the head of government said, after referring to security crackdowns, the Goobjoog portal reported. Al Shabbab attacks against the aforementioned hotel zone, in the north of this capital, were several, the most recent last July, when 11 persons were killed in a restaurant while enjoying the end of the Eurocup soccer tournament.

In 2016, Al Shabbab, with a car bomb and machine gun fire, attacked another hotel in Lido beach, killing 20 people, and in 2020, similar action left 11 deaths. Right thee, in 2023, the radical group killed six civilians and three military personnel.
