UN calls for investigation into Beirut port explosion

Beirut, Aug 3 (Prensa Latina) The United Nations Special Coordinator for Lebanon, Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert, today called for a thorough and transparent investigation to get the truth about the Beirut port explosion on August 4, 2020.

Four years after the tragedy, the UN representative emphasized the need for justice and accountability, in a meeting with the families of some of the victims.

In this context, the Special Coordinator stressed the importance of an independent and well-functioning judiciary in Lebanon, along with other empowered and effective state institutions.

According to a press release from the Office of the UN Special Coordinator for Lebanon, the families shared their stories of this unprecedented tragedy that decimated lives, families and homes.

At the same time, they recounted their search for truth, justice and accountability, so far in vain, over the past four years.

The tragedy of the Beirut port explosion had repercussions around the world.

“It is distressing to see them once again fall victim to the failure of delivering justice,” Hennis-Plasschaert said.

For the UN official, it is to be hoped that the relevant authorities will work tirelessly to remove all barriers, structural or political, and move forward in the search for the truth.

On August 4, 2020, the ignition of more than 2,000 tons of ammonium nitrate improperly stored for six years in the port of Beirut killed more than 200 people, injured another 6,500 and displaced thousands of citizens.
