Cease-fire between Colombian Government and ELN expires

Bogota, Aug 3 (Prensa Latina) The ceasefire decreed between the Colombian Government and the National Liberation Army (ELN) expires today amid growing demands from several sectors for the parties to resume the currently frozen talks.

Among the organizations requesting the resumption of the talks are the Episcopal Conference, the special representative of the United Nations Secretary General in the country, Carlos Ruiz; and the National Unitary Command (CNU), made up of the three largest labor federations in the country and two confederations of pensioners.

In a letter addressed to the government delegation drafted jointly by the UN representative and the Catholic Church, who act as companions, a technical extension of the cease-fire was recommended in order to advance in the preparations for an extraordinary meeting to address the substantive issues of the process.

The government representatives welcomed the initiative and, in a letter in response to the proposal, reaffirmed their willingness to hold a meeting to reactivate the Dialogue Table and extend the suspension of hostilities.

Earlier this week, this delegation had already expressed its intention to resume talks and renew the truce with the aforementioned insurgent group.

We have heard the call from the territories and from very diverse spheres of society to resume our talks and renew the Bilateral, National and Temporary Ceasefire, and we will make all the necessary efforts for this to happen,’ the statement said.

Despite this intention, the possibility of extending the ceasefire is still uncertain.

The Government and the ELN reach the expiration of the suspension of hostilities in the midst of serious disagreements.
