Threats and attacks against journalists, human rights defenders and persons affiliated with the State continued to be recorded,” Binuh underlines on its report.
Earlier, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (Unesco) expressed its concern about the violence and pressures that journalists in Haiti must endure while carrying out their daily work.
The international organization condemned any attack against reporters and called for respect for freedom of the press and the right to information.
In 2023, a study published by Unesco underlined that reporters run serious risks in the exercise of their profession, are poorly paid and, in order to survive, sometimes carry out activities incompatible with their profession.
The report of the international organization warns that the media generally refrain from investigating sensitive issues such as corruption or drug trafficking, preferring to version texts of human rights organizations instead of producing their own investigations, this self-censorship responds to the instinct of survival in such a hostile context for the profession.
As for the right of access to information, such a mechanism does not exist in Haiti, as the authorities communicate according to their will or their own interests, the investigation of the international agency points out.
