Uruguay’s unemployment falls, but workers have no social security

Montevideo, August 2 (Prensa Latina) Uruguay's unemployment rate fell for the second consecutive month in June, the National Statistics Institute (INE) reported on Friday, although the number of workers without social security remains high.

In the sixth month of the year, the unemployment rate was 8.1 percent after reaching a peak of nine percent in March and April.

The INE stated this in its latest “Activity, Employment and Unemployment” report, which shows stagnation in the employment rate, which barely moved from 58.5 percent to 58.6 percent from one month to the next.

The number of active workers was something more than 1.87 million people, over 1.72 million of which are employed and almost 152,700 are unemployed.

Montevideo continues to have the lowest unemployment rate, averaging 7.7 percent.
