St. Vincent and the Grenadines on contingency due to dengue outbreak

Kingstown, Aug 2 (Prensa Latina) The health authorities of St. Vincent and the Grenadines proceeded with a reinforced protocol to contain, as soon as possible, the confirmed outbreak of dengue fever that the country is experiencing which left at least 119 cases.

The Ministry of Health decided to increase surveillance and tracking of mosquito breeding sites, provide the epidemiological work with the necessary equipment and additional workers, and increase the frequency of spraying throughout the national territory.

It contracted a private company to reinforce vector control and eliminate outbreaks in the south of the country, as this is the most complicated area during the current outbreak.

As a whole, the Government will develop an educational campaign to inform the population, who is the most vulnerable, about the symptoms of the disease, preventive measures, and what to do in case of contracting it.

Likewise, it will monitor the evolution of dengue at regional and international levels and then proceed according to the situation. In confirming the outbreak, St. Vincent and the Grenadines stated that it recorded 23 cases in June, 82 in July and projections point to a continuous increase in the number of patients because the Aedes aegypti mosquito is circulating in the country.

The government does not rule out the possibility of cases of zika and chikungunya, two other diseases caused by the same insect.
