Sierra Leone holds UN Security Council in August

ONU
United Nations, Aug 1 (Prensa Latina) The delegation of Sierra Leone is holding the chairmanship of the United Nations Security Council in August, while the risk of a regional war threatens the Middle East.

The forum held an emergency meeting on Wednesday after Israel attacked the capitals of Lebanon and Iran within a few hours between each other, dramatically increasing tensions in the region.

The African nation returns to the Security Council after more than five decades. Authorities consider it a show of respect for the country.

Sierra Leone has held one of the non-permanent seats on the top body since January for the 2024-2025 term, after enduring a decade of civil war and embarking on a 20-year journey of post-war reconstruction.

This period included the deployment of the UN Mission in Sierra Leone, which played an essential role in easing the end of the conflict.

The Security Council’s presidency is held by each of all 15 members in turn for one month, following the English alphabetical order of the member states’ names.
