Petro: A foreign government cannot decide who leads Venezuela

Bogota, Aug 1 (Prensa Latina) The president of Colombia, Gustavo Petro, commented on his social network X that it is not up to a foreign government to decide who is the president of Venezuela.

His position reaffirms what was expressed on Wednesday in a statement released by his country’s Foreign Ministry where it was stated that the actions of the Colombian government will continue to adhere to the diplomatic principles of confidentiality, respect and non-interference.

According to the President, it is up to the Venezuelans to reach a political agreement so that the violence in their country ceases and to establish the way to carry out a vote with guarantees for all.

In view of the destabilization situation in Venezuela, Petro has asked its authorities and people to reach an understanding so that peace prevails.

Yesterday, Colombia abstained in a meeting convened by the Organization of American States (OAS) where the necessary majority of its member states was not obtained to “demand transparency” to the government of President Nicolás Maduro, proclaimed winner by the National Electoral Council in the recent presidential elections.

In a statement issued after the conclave, the Colombian government affirmed that the OAS is not the appropriate scenario to address issues related to the Venezuelan political situation.

The text released by the official channels of the Foreign Ministry explained that this is due to the fact that the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela is not formally part of the OAS since 2019.

Likewise, it added, some of the positions adopted in the past in that organization regarding events related to that nation have departed from neutrality and from the principle “of respect for the personality, sovereignty and independence of States”, established in the OAS Charter.
