Cuba reviews preventive measures due to active hurricane season

Havana, Aug 1 (Prensa Latina) Cuba is reviewing the preventive measures to reduce risks and vulnerabilities before the beginning of the second month of the hurricane season on Thursday, which experts predict will be very active.

Cuba expects a rainy period (July 1 to November 30) with above-average rainfall in all regions and a high probability (80 percent) of a hurricane hitting the country, which makes it necessary to resort to preventive measures based on its vast experience in these matters.

Faced with this scenario, the General Staff of Cuba’s Civil Defense (EMNDC) recently instructed to increase the preparedness of the organizations, management structures, and the population; point out the availability of early warning systems, and monitor low-lying or poorly drained areas.

Colonel Luis Macareño, second chief of EMNDC, pointed out during the last working session of the Council of Ministers the need to increase the cleaning of riverbeds and the maintenance of river and coastal flood protection works.

Macareño also insisted on reviewing the certification of emergency power generating units, increasing their technical availability, checking micro-dams, and adopting measures to ensure their technical control.

In June, the month with the highest historical average rainfall of the year, the national rainfall average reached 121 percent, according to the Cuban Presidency and Government website.
