Caribbean nations commemorate Emancipation Day

Port of Spain, Aug 1 (Prensa Latina) Caribbean nations are commemorating Emancipation Day on Thursday with several events that mark the end of centuries of slavery imposed by British colonialism in the region.

Territories like Trinidad and Tobago, Bermuda, Barbados, Guyana, and Jamaica, among others, are developing a program to highlight the typical manifestations of their cultures, idiosyncrasies, and the most relevant aspects of their national history.

Other jurisdictions such as Anguilla, Turks and Caicos Islands, and the British Virgin Islands will commemorate the date next week with similar events in public spaces.

All events will conclude with the customary government message for the historic date. Emancipation Day took place in emerged after the signing of the Abolition of Slavery Act in all United Kingdom’s colonies, except for St. Helen Island in the southern Atlantic Ocean and Ceylon, now Sri Lanka, on August 1, 1833.
