Bolivian Deputies approve suspension of primary elections

La Paz, Aug 1 (Prensa Latina) The Bolivian Chamber of Deputies approved the bill to suspend the primary elections for presidential candidates, in order to prioritize the judicial elections.

After a day that concluded this Thursday at 6:00 a.m. Bolivian time, the legal initiative will be sent to the Senate for a similar procedure.

The legal project was prepared and presented by the Supreme Electoral Tribunal (TSE), in compliance with an agreement between 11 political parties and two alliances with legislative representation (Creemos and Comunidad Ciudadana).

The Executive and Legislative bodies, as well as social organizations, are also part of this understanding, which was signed in the presence of representatives of the accredited diplomatic corps.

The draft regulation 482 provides that, exceptionally, for the 2025 general elections, primary elections for presidential candidates will not be held.

In this way, priority will be given to the judicial elections scheduled to be held this 2024, after the pre-selection process of candidates.

“This session has been very tense and even aggressions (…)”, the president of the Chamber of Deputies, Israel Huaytari, declared to the press.

However, “the plenary with absolute majority approved the two bills, one for the transfer of land to the municipality of Quillacollo and the second for the suspension of primary elections. The plenary by absolute majority has approved the two bills”, the authority informed.

The election of members of the Beni Departmental Electoral Tribunal was pending from the agenda.

Now, the approval of the law of suspension of primary elections passed to the Senate, where it must be approved before its promulgation by the Executive.
