Palestine declares national mourning after Hamas leader’s killing

Ramallah, Jul 31 (Prensa Latina) Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas declared a day of mourning on Wednesday following the assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in an attack blamed on Israel that caused a wave of condemnation in the Middle East.

Wafa detailed that the flag will be lowered this Wednesday as a sign of mourning for the death of the top figure of the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas).

Earlier in a brief statement, Abbas described the attack as cowardly and dangerous and called on the Palestinian people to be united and stand firm against the Israeli aggression.

Hussein al-Sheikh, secretary of the Executive Committee of the Palestine Liberation Organization, issued a similar statement.

“We strongly denounce and condemn the assassination,” the leader wrote in a post on X.

The Government and National Council (Parliament) President Rawhi Fattouh also condemned the incident. This cowardly criminal action represents a dangerous escalation that will plunge the region into a spiral of violence, Fattouh warned.

The ruling Fatah movement, in turn, described the event as a heinous and cowardly crime.

Meanwhile, the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine lamented Haniyeh’s death in Tehran, where he was visiting to attend the swearing-in ceremony of Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian on Tuesday.

The attack is part of the “Israeli state terrorism policy and the war of annihilation, destruction, and murder” that its Army is waging in the occupied territories, they stressed in a joint press release.
