India and China discuss common border with a future vision

New Delhi, Jul 31 (Prensa Latina) India and China today held an in-depth, constructive and forward-looking meeting on the issue of the common border, the Ministry of External Affairs said here today.

To address the situation, delegations from both countries held the 30th meeting of the Working Mechanism for Consultation and Coordination on Border Issues in New Delhi, diplomatic sources said.

Headed by Gourangalal Das, deputy secretary for East Asia of the Indian Foreign Ministry, and Hong Liang, director general of the Department of Borders and Oceans of the Chinese counterpart, the meeting was held as agreed by the heads of diplomacy of the two countries in recent talks in Astana and Vientiane.

During the meeting, the two sides reviewed the current situation along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) with a view to finding an early solution to outstanding issues.

Restoration of peace and tranquility and respect for the boundary zone are an essential basis for normal bilateral relations, New Delhi said.

The Indian and Chinese representations also agreed on the need to jointly uphold peace and tranquility in the common border area in accordance with the relevant bilateral agreements, protocols and understandings reached between the two governments, the Foreign Ministry said.

New Delhi said the discussion at the meeting was in-depth, constructive and forward-looking and both delegations agreed to maintain the momentum through established diplomatic and military channels.

The diplomatic source said that the head of the Chinese delegation, Hong Liang, also visited Foreign Minister Subrahmanyan Jaishankar.
