Gabriel also pointed out that what is worrying is not the intention of the United States to locate missiles in German territory itself, but rather the fact that there is no public debate on this matter.

According to this former diplomat, quoted by the Rheinische Post newspaper, weapons systems always require the population to understand the reasons for their deployment and at least the consent of the majority.

Gabriel also expressed confidence that not only the Social Democratic Party of Germany, to which he belongs, but also the country’s population, has a negative attitude towards Berlin and Washington’s plans to deploy missiles in Germany. He asserted that, despite this, the decision on the missiles was taken, simply as that.

On July 10th, the White House press service announced that the United States will begin deploying missiles in Germany in 2026 with a longer range than those already deployed in Europe.

On the other hand, Russia’s ambassador to Washington, Anatoly Antonov, said the plans raise the possibility of a missile armed race and may lead to an uncontrollable escalation.
