Yirga held a meeting with Chinese Vice Minister of Justice Li Mingzheng focused on strengthening mutual legal assistance in criminal matters, enhancing cooperation between the two countries’ judicial systems and exploring ways to improve the efficiency of cross-border prosecutions.
Mingzheng welcomed the African delegation who were in Beijing on a working visit to negotiate the China-Ethiopia treaty on the transfer and management of sentenced persons and criminal legal assistance.
He expressed the Asian state portfolio’s willingness to work with its Ethiopian counterpart to effectively implement the important consensus reached by the leaders of the two countries, promote the healthy development of bilateral relations through pragmatic cooperation on the rule of law.
Also, to provide solid legal guarantees for the all-weather strategic partnership between the two countries announced last year.
The two sides discussed issues related to judicial administration, especially legislative procedures, prison management and lawyer management, and reached important consensuses on expanding channels of exchange and deepening cooperation in the sector.
For his part, Yirga praised China’s achievements in socio-economic development and the rule of law, while expressing his willingness to further deepen exchanges with the Ministry of Justice and promote cooperation.
The meeting was also attended by the deputy head of the Addis Ababa Embassy in Beijing, Dawano Kedir.
