Talks between Putin and Al-Assad focus on Syria’s situation

Moscow, Jul 26 (Prensa Latina) The situation in Syria was at the center of the talks between Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Syrian counterpart, Bashar Al-Assad, Kremlin Spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Friday.

In general, there was a fairly broad exchange of views on all issues related to the situation in the region around Syria, Peskov told reporters.

The spokesman explained that the main topic of the meeting was the political settlement and the current situation in the Middle East.

In this context, Peskov commented on Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s proposal to create a North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) analogue in the region to counter Iran.

Do we need confrontational mechanisms in the Middle East? Unlikely, the spokesman stressed.

He recalled that the Atlantic Alliance is characterized by a systemic confrontational approach and that it was created to deter the Soviet Union and continues to play its roles to counter Russia.

Syria has gone through a conflict since 2011 in which government forces are confronting armed opposition groups and terrorist organizations.

A solution to the conflict is being sought on two platforms, that of Geneva, under the auspices of the United Nations, and that of Astana, under the mediation of Russia, Türkiye and Iran.

Efforts currently focus on finding a political solution to the Syrian crisis and the return of refugees.
