The event took place at the Cuban Embassy on the 71st anniversary of the attacks on two garrisons of the Fulgencio Batista tyranny, led by Fidel Castro’s leadership.

Lawmakers and other Uruguayan friends of Cuba, ambassadors from several countries, and Cuban residents here were among participants at the celebration.

Also present were members of a Cuban medical brigade that provides services at the “José Martí” Eye Hospital, a cooperation project that has been around for 17 years,

Cuba is an example of resistance and defense of sovereignty, Matilde Pomi, from the Federation of University Students of Uruguay, stated.

She represented the Uruguayan Anti-imperialist Committee of Solidarity with Cuba and the Peoples of the World, which brings together various social and political groups in the South American country.

Cuba is a heroic example, without giving up, said Pomi, who criticized the blockade policy that the US Government has imposed on the Caribbean island for more than six decades.

Cuban Ambassador Zulan Popa stressed that her people do not give up and rely on the support they receive from other nations.

An example is the brigades that bring solidarity to her homeland, including from Uruguay, where a new campaign to collect medical supplies and medicines for the Cuban people has started.
