Hungary blocks compensation in EU for Ukraine’s rearmament

Budapest, Jul 23 (Prensa Latina) Hungary announced on Tuesday that it will block a compensation proposal for European Union (EU) countries participating in the rearmament of Ukraine until the Russian oil supply through that country is solved.

“As long as the resumption of Russian oil supplies through pipelines passing through Ukraine remains unsolved, we will maintain the blockade of EU subsidies for arms shipments to Kiev,” Magyar Foreign Minister Peter Szijjártó stated as quoted by the ATV website.

While the Russian company Lukoil cannot deliver the hydrocarbon to us, due to actions taken by Kyiv, European nations must forget about the 6.5 billion euros in compensation they receive for sending supplies to Ukraine, the diplomat asserted.

For the EU High Representative for Foreign Policy and International Security, Josep Borrell, the elimination of subsidies would highly discourage the States now involved in the rearmament of Kyiv.

Hungary and Slovakia submitted a request to the European Commission, the EU’s executive body, to implement one of the clauses of the EU’s strategic cooperation agreement with Ukraine.

The provision refers to the need to maintain the purchase of Russian hydrocarbon by pipeline, above other considerations, and, in case of violation of that rule, the European Commission must represent the European States in the dispute with Kiev.

Hungary rejects the rearmament of Ukraine, where on February 24, 2022 President Vladimir Putin announced the start of a war operation to protect the uprising region of Donbas, as well as to demilitarize and denazify Ukraine.
