ECLAC presents pillars for sustainable tourism

cepal-1
Havana, Jul 24 (Prensa Latina) The Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) issued a press release in this capital on Wednesday that highlights its pillars for sustainable tourism.

It consists of five pillars to promote a territorial approach to the issue. The press release issued in Havana points out that in 2023, Mexico was the country in Latin America and the Caribbean that received most tourists and money from tourist arrivals, and could improve its performance by addressing the challenges in the economic, environmental, social, cultural, and governance fields.

For the said year, Mexico stood out as the country in the region with more visitors, with an estimated 42 million tourists out of the 76 million that visited Latin America and the Caribbean, and 118 billion dollars, this nation received 30.6 billion dollars, 26 percent of that total.

Leda Peralta, head of the Agricultural Development and Climate Change Unit of ECLAC’s sub-regional headquarters in Mexico, pointed out that tourism is estimated to contribute to 10 percent of employment in Latin America and 35 percent in the Caribbean.

Despite its importance for employment, some 52 percent of workers are in the informal sector. Women occupy about 58 percent of jobs in accommodation and food services, while young people up to the age of 24 occupy 21 percent.
