UN confirms Israeli shooting at one of its vehicles in Gaza

United Nations, Jul 22 (Prensa Latina) An armored vehicle of the United Nations (UN) was hit by at least five bullets while waiting at a checkpoint of Israeli forces in central Gaza, the agency said today.

A statement from the UN Agency for Palestinian Refugees, known as Unrwa, confirmed the incident reported Sunday as a convoy was waiting to advance into the central part of the enclave as part of a coordinated operation with the Tel Aviv Defense Forces.

Although there were no casualties, the teams had to get down and take cover, Unrwa Commissioner General Philippe Lazzarini said in a message posted on X.

The vehicle was badly damaged and got out of the convoy, although they were eventually reunited and reached Gaza City, the commissioner general added.

The mission, Lazzarini said, like all other similar UN movements, was coordinated and approved by the Israeli authorities

“Aid workers are not a target. Those responsible must be held accountable,” the seasoned diplomat urged as he demanded guarantees to operate in the enclave under Israeli siege since October 7.

According to Unrwa, in the last 10 days, at least eight schools have been hit while about 190 Agency facilities have been attacked since the beginning of the conflict, including some more than once.
