Poland proposes meeting of EU foreign ministers in Ukraine

Warsaw, Jul 22 (Prensa Latina) In another attempt to boycott the temporary Hungarian presidency of the European Union (EU), the Polish Minister of Foreign Affairs, Rodoslav Sikorsky, proposed today to hold a meeting of foreign ministers of that bloc in Ukraine.

The initiative of the head of Polish diplomacy, who advocated a meeting in Lvov instead of Budapest, was finally blocked by Hungary during a meeting of the EU foreign ministers in Brussels, local television reported.

I put forward a compromise proposal to hold the informal ministerial meeting in the western Ukrainian city of Lvov, something that has already taken place in the past, in a demonstration of our solidarity with Kiev, Sikorsky was quoted here by TVP Info as saying.

For now, the place where the meeting of EU foreign ministers will be held next August is still undefined, in the middle of Budapest’s rejection of the attempts of other states to block these six months of the Magyar presidency in the EU.

This was due, above all, to the attempts of the Hungarian Prime Minister, Viktor Orban, to advance a peace proposal for Ukraine and to make trips as mediator to Kiev and Moscow, where he spoke with the heads of state Vladimir Zelensky and Vladimir Putin, respectively.

Budapest also rejects the rearmament of Ukraine, which Russia considers only extends the confrontation that began on February 24, 2022, when President Vladimir Putin ordered a military operation to protect the uprising region of Donbas.

Warsaw, on the other hand, has been a promoter of arms supplies to Kiev, including U.S. F-16 fighters, capable of carrying nuclear weapons, something to which Moscow drew attention by communicating to the West about the negative consequences of such a step.
