New HIV/AIDS infections decline in South Africa

Pretoria, Jul 22 (Prensa Latina) New HIV infections in South Africa have declined in the last few years, a UNAIDS report stated.

The organization’s latest report shows that new infections have declined most rapidly in sub-Saharan Africa, Winnie Byanyima, Executive Director of the Joint United Nations Program on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS), stated.

Byanyima noted that new infections in South Africa are now less than half of what they were in 2010.

In that context, the South African Department of Health announced that Health Minister Joe Phaahla is in Munich, Germany, to attend the 25th International AIDS Conference, which started this Monday.

This year’s Conference theme, “Put People First,” advocates key players to intensify efforts to promote human rights, provide adequate healthcare, and protect civil rights.

According to a statement from the South African presidency, this HIV/AIDS conference, the largest and most influential in the world, will include discussions on key population-led innovations, artificial intelligence, and digital technology in healthcare, among others.
