The volcano threw ashes, rocks and gases that generated a column of 780 meters and was visible from different points of the regions of La Araucanía and Los Lagos, where it is located.

There were also earthquakes associated with the explosive activity inside the massif, Sernageomin reported.

Although it is relatively minor activity, it does have a direct impact on the surrounding areas, Álvaro Amigo, head of the institution’s National Volcanic Surveillance Network, reported.

The authorities are maintaining a security perimeter of 1.5 kilometers from the center of the crater.

The Villarrica, at 2,847 meters above sea level, has a long history of intense eruptions.
