11 deaths in China after bridge collapse

Beijing, Jul 20 (Prensa Latina) Chinese President Xi Jinping today urged to speed up the rescue and relief of victims after the collapse of a bridge that caused at least 11 deaths and 30 missing.

The collapse occurred in Zhashui county, northern Shaanxi province, following heavy rains and flash floods.

Rescue work continues at the site and according to the official statement, as of 10:00 am local time, five vehicles and 11 fatalities were found, while nearly 20 vehicles and more than 30 people are missing.

This type of accident is relatively common in China during the rainy season, so the country’s top leadership insists on strengthening early warnings and rapid responses to disasters, as well as ensuring the lives of people and the preservation of their property.

In early May, the southern province of Guangdong reported the collapse of a section of the Meizhou-Dabu highway that caused at least 48 deaths.

The region had been under the influence of heavy rains and floods for several weeks, which also caused millions of dollars in losses, house collapses, and other damage.
