Cuban Parliament laments Vietnamese top leader’s death

Havana, Jul 19 (Prensa Latina) The National People's Power Assembly (Parliament) of Cuba lamented the death of the general secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam, Nguyen Phu Trong, who passed away on Friday at the age of 80.

During the 3rd Ordinary Session of the legislative body, its president, Esteban Lazo, asked to observe a minute of silence in homage to the Vietnamese leader and acknowledged his revolutionary experience.

Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel also lamented Phu Trong’s death and extended heartfelt condolences to the Vietnamese people, relatives and friends.

“A faithful friend of Cuba has died,” the president wrote in X.

Nguyen Phu Trong was born on April 14, 1944 and since the 11th National Congress of the Communist Party of Vietnam (2011) he served as General Secretary of the Central Committee and Secretary of the Central Military Commission, posts that he held until his death.

Phu Trong won the Order of the Golden Star, the highest honor awarded by the Socialist Republic of Vietnam to people with significant and particularly distinguished contributions to the revolutionary cause of the Party and the nation, and the medal of Resistance against the United States of the first category.

The the party’s Central Committee, the National Assembly, the President of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, the Government and the Central Committee of the Fatherland Front will issue a special announcement on the organization of national mourning for the Party leader, an official note released in Hanoi said.
