African Union Executive Council debates important issues

Accra, Jul 19 (Prensa Latina) The 45th Ordinary Session of the Executive Council of the African Union (AU) debates the draft budget for 2025, deficiencies in the contributions of member states and the Peace Fund.

The session is being held before the Sixth Mid-Year Coordination Meeting scheduled for July 21st, under the theme “Educating and training Africa for the 21st century.”

Conducting a comprehensive analysis of the issues, the president of the AU Commission, Moussa Faki Mahamat, explained that the draft budget for next year was carefully prepared from the beginning, bringing into play all capacities to contribute to the document.

Mahamat commented that the level of contributions from Member States, capped at $200 million instead of the $250 million set by the Council in 2023, took into account the cash flow pressure faced by most African countries.

The president of the Commission pointed out as structural problems the increased dependence of the AU on its partners and the coherence of the organization’s policy, the latter being very ambitious in terms of integration and development with its real financial capabilities.

Referring to the operationalization of the Peace Fund and the adoption of the principle of financing African peacekeeping missions with sustainable resources, he said they are targeted to important sectoral developments. “The sustainability of this Fund will depend on the quality of its governance, on a prudent and effective investment policy and, most importantly, on a policy of transparency, aimed at encouraging favorable responses to the appeals made to the various contributors,” he asserted.
