Cuba honored for fighting against apartheid and for Nelson Mandela

Havana, Jul 18 (Prensa Latina) Cuba's contribution to the end of the apartheid and the freedom of Nelson Mandela was described as an honor by President Miguel Diaz-Canel on the occasion of Mandela International Day on Thursday.

The Cuban president wrote on his X profile: “Cuba is honored to have contributed decisively to ending apartheid and freeing Madiba, a great friend of Fidel. The two leaders’ embrace sums up the history of our people.”

Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez also used the same social platform to join the tribute to Mandela on his 106th birthday, which is also being commemorated on this day. The diplomat stated, “his work will continue to be an example for our peoples.”

Rodriguez described the historic South African leader as “an example of resistance against apartheid” and recalled Mandela’s unconditional friendship with Cuba and its Revolution.

Cuba played an essential role in the end of that segregationist regime and the liberation of Nelson Mandela. For some 30 years, it supported Algeria in its struggle against France and helped to preserve its independence.
