Olivera had resigned on Wednesday from her seat and the PN, and was sentenced to six months in prison to be served on probation, after an agreement with the prosecution to shortened trial.

She was sentenced for usurpation of functions, after she approved the payment of overtime irregularly to officials of the Artigas City Hall.

Before, for the same crime, Mayor Pablo Caram, uncle of the former legislator, was sentenced to the same penalty.

The crime for which Olivera was charged does not include disqualification from holding public office as an accessory penalty, so it is not part of the agreed sentence.

Despite being found guilty, the defendant had plans to take office as mayor of Artigas next Friday.

However, experts quoted by local media agree on the application of Article 80 of the Constitution, which suspends the citizenship of all persons prosecuted with imprisonment.

On the other hand, Article 267 establishes citizenship in exercise as a requirement to hold the office of mayor.
