In a statement from Comisión Política, the group called on all sectors of society, including political parties, the Workers’ United Center of Chile (CUT), students’ federations and universities to establish a firm commitment against crime.
“The country is at a critical crossroads. Organized crime and drug trafficking have reached alarming levels, seriously endangering the security of citizens and the stability of our democratic institutions,” the CPCh stated.
These problems not only threaten the integrity of the national territory and the rule of law, but also undermine the social, political and financial system, the text added.
The party proposes the rapid implementation of the so-called short security agenda agreed upon between the Executive and the National Congress, as well as making adjustments and redirecting resources to strengthen the forces of law and order.
Chile is going through an acute security crisis that in four days has left 18 dead, 17 of them in the Metropolitan Region, where the capital is located, including four adolescents aged 13-17.
