Ethiopia’s PM welcomes South Sudan’s CFA ratification

Addis Ababa, Jul 17 (Prensa Latina) Ethiopia's Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed described South Sudan's ratification of the Nile River Basin Cooperative Framework Agreement (CFA) as a historic moment on Wednesday.

Ahmed emphasized, “This diplomatic milestone marks a significant step in our collective aspiration for regional cooperation in the Nile Basin. The ratification will provide impetus for working towards the common good of our people through the establishment of the Nile Basin Commission.”

Ethiopian Foreign Minister Taye Atske-Selassie wrote on his X profile that the CFA resulted from deep foresight, hard work, and patience. It is “the first of many great things to come in all Nile River countries.”

South Sudan’s Transitional National Legislative Assembly ratified the Framework Agreement on July 8. It is a significant milestone in the long-standing efforts to ensure equitable use and sustainable development of the Nile waters among the involved states, Fana Broadcasting Corporate informed.

The Nile Basin Initiative (NBI), which celebrated its 25th anniversary this year, has been a key player in advocating for the transformation into a Permanent Nile Basin Organization.

Launched in Dar es Salaam on February 22, 1999, the initiative culminated in the development of the CFA after a decade of intense negotiations.

Its ratification is essential to transition from the NBI, a transitional arrangement, into the Nile Basin Commission, a permanent river basin organization.
