Cuban deputies elect new members of the Council of State

Havana, Jul 17 (Prensa Latina) Deputies of Cuba's National Assembly of People's Power (parliament) voted today for four new members of the Council of State, who will occupy vacant posts in that structure.

Prior to the vote, Aylin Alvarez, Julio Emilio Morejon, Rafael Santiesteban and Angelica Chorens presented their letters of resignation to the supreme organ of state power.

The president of the legislative body, Esteban Lazo, acknowledged their professional experience and pointed out that they will continue as deputies of the National Assembly.

The head of the National Electoral Council, Alina Balseiro, informed that the persons proposed in this case are the first secretary of the Union of Young Communists, Meyvis Estévez, the president of the Federation of University Students, Ricardo Rodríguez, the president of the National Association of Small Farmers, Félix Duarte, and the general director of the José Martí Steel Company, Reynier Guillermo Otero.

The results of the election will be announced in the afternoon session this Wednesday, during the third ordinary session of the National Assembly.

The Council of State is the organ of the National Assembly of People’s Power that represents it between sessions, executes its resolutions and performs the other functions assigned to it by the Constitution. It has a collegiate character, is responsible to Parliament and is accountable to it for all its activities.
