Cuba to install 2,012 megawatts in 92 new facilities

Havana, Jul 17 (Prensa Latina) Cuba will install 2,012 megawatts (MW) in 92 new facilities, of 21.87 MW each, to generate 3,400 gigawatt hours (GWH) annually, saving 890,000 tones of fossil fuels, it was announced recently.

The information was disclosed at a meeting of the Industry, Construction and Energy Commission of the National People’s Power (Parliament), which is in session this week at Havana’s Conference Center, Granma newspaper reported.

As part of the program for the construction of photovoltaic solar parks, which closed in 2023 with an installed capacity of 286 MW, three such facilities donated by the Chinese Government were completed in 2024 and are already in operation, generating 12 MW.

Minister of Energy and Mines Vicente de la O Levy pointed out that 71 containers have arrived with the necessary resources, while another 186 containers are on their way to Cuba, and 708 are being shipped, with an impact by the rising prices of shipping companies and the banking obstacles generated by the United States blockade.

A working group made up of project companies from the National Electrical Union, the Ministries of Construction and the Revolutionary Armed Forces is finalizing the executive projects.

Additionally, by the end of 2024, supplies will arrive to synchronise, in the first quarter of 2025, nine pending wind farms of a 100 MW project.

Efforts are also being targeted at 22 parks of 120 MW from a Chinese donation, 35 of which are arriving this year.

It was pointed out that programs for the development, maintenance and sustainability of renewable energy sources are being carried out, such as the change of the energy matrix in the water resources sector, where water is pumped using solar energy, thus benefiting some 400,000 inhabitants.
