Cuba reaffirms impact of US blockade on local development

Havana, Jul 17 (Prensa Latina) Cuban Prime Minister Manuel Marrero stressed on Wednesday that the United States blockade is the main external cause of the difficulties to promote the country's full growth.

He said before the National People’s Power Assemblyh (ANPP, Parliament), that the US Government’s hostile policy, ‘expressed in an economic war,’ has a major impact on the government’s management and the quality of life of the Cuban people. Marrero described the US policy against Cuba as genocidal, and warned that it has remained unchanged in the first half of this year.

The US blockade considerably affects the country’s main sources of income: the export of goods and services, foreign investment, access to foreign credits and remittances, slowing down the performance of our economy, he said.

This factors, together with the slow recovery process of the world economy after the Covid-19 pandemic, leads to an increase in the cost of freight, food, fuel and raw materials, which further aggravates Cuba’s situation, he said.

In spite of these circumstances, Cuba has maintained the functioning of the indispensable economic and social activities, focused on achieving self-sufficiency and guaranteeing food production, in addition to leading the national economic framework from the government.

In addition, he pointed out that there are many deficiencies in the country itself, which also threaten the development efforts and policies, which ‘we will continue to face with strength’.

The prime minister appeared on the first day of the 3rd Ordinary Session of the 10th Legislature to present a report on how the Government’s Action Plan to correct distortions and relaunch the economy by 2024 is going on.
