Macron accepts the resignation of French prime minister

Gabriel-Attal
Paris, July 16 (Prensa Latina) French President Emmanuel Macron today accepted the resignation of Prime Minister Gabriel Attal, who will continue to be in charge of "current affairs" until the appointment of his replacement.

Attal had presented his resignation and that of his government on Monday of last week, after the recent setbacks for the ruling party in the European elections (June 9) and legislative elections (June 30 and July 7).

However, Macron then asked him to remain in office, arguing for the preservation of the country’s stability. What happened today means that the resigning government will fulfill basic functions so that France continues without a power vacuum until the formation of a new executive in the coming weeks.

The context is particularly complex, just 10 days before the start of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, which will be followed by the Paralympic Games at the end of August.

“Duty motivates us until the last minute to ensure the continuity of the State,” said Attal, who will appear before the French tonight.

A few days ago, Macron asked the country for patience to give time to create alliances and agreements in the National Assembly, which would allow the nomination of a prime minister in charge of forming a government, in a lower house with all the political forces far from the absolute majority.

However, the left-wing New Popular Front bloc is pressuring the president to appoint a prime minister from its ranks, after being the one that obtained the most deputies in the recent elections to define the composition of the Assembly.
